2022: THE 1ST MUNDIAL IN SAILING

Following the global success of football and rugby, sailing officially launches its own worldwide and popular event — the Mundial in Sailing.

After football in 1930, cricket in 1975, and rugby in 1987, sailing is ready to introduce its brand-new team Mundial in 2022 with the SSL Gold Cup. Inspired by the major World Cups, this competition is an equal-opportunity event with no social, geographical, financial, or cultural discrimination. All teams compete under the same conditions, ensuring fairness at the highest level.

Just as traditional World Cups crown world champion nations in their respective sports, the SSL Gold Cup stands as the ultimate challenge among sailing nations, awarding the prestigious title of Sailing World Champion.

Developed as part of a World Sailing special event and initiated by the world’s best sailors, this new Mundial follows the core concept of all major World Cups. It aims to unite men, women, and youth from all continents through the shared emotion of supporting their national team. The SSL Gold Cup fills a long-missing gap by creating a true national challenge in sailing and bringing together a wide global audience in an Olympic sport already practiced by tens of millions worldwide.

56 TEAMS FOR THE 1ST MUNDIAL IN SAILING

Like the pinnacle events in football, the SSL Gold Cup brings together the best teams from five continents, composed entirely of their top national athletes. In 2022, 56 teams from the 143 federations affiliated with World Sailing will participate in the 1st Mundial in Sailing, marking a historic milestone for the sport.

COMPETITION FORMAT

General

The SSL Gold Cup follows a thrilling elimination format designed to lead teams toward the supreme title. This innovative system enhances traditional sailing competitions while making the event easy to understand for audiences. The format ultimately crowns the Top Sailing Nation through a breathtaking single-race Grand Final, where everything is decided in one decisive contest.

The competition format was originally designed by athletes in 2012 and first tested during the inaugural SSL Finals in Nassau in 2013. Since then, it has been used annually at major SSL events and refined through continuous improvements suggested by world-class sailors, including Ian Williams, Torben Grael, and Robert Scheidt.

Similar to tennis tournaments and the UEFA Champions League in football, the competition structure allows the lowest-ranked nations in the SSL Nations Ranking to begin the event earlier, while higher-ranked teams enter in later stages.

Qualifying Series

Nations ranked 25 to 56 in the SSL Nations Ranking must participate in the Qualifying Series. This phase consists of five rounds, with four nations competing in each of the eight groups. At the end of the qualifying rounds, the top two teams from each group advance to the Final Series.

Final Series

The Final Series features the top 24 nations from the SSL Nations Ranking along with the 16 teams qualified from the Qualifying Series. The competition progresses through multiple knockout stages. The 1/32 Finals include the 16 qualified teams from the Qualifying Series. The 1/16 Finals feature eight nations ranked 17 to 24 in the SSL Rankings alongside eight winners from the 1/32 Finals. In the 1/8 Finals, eight nations ranked 9 to 16 join the eight winners from the 1/16 Finals. The Quarterfinals (1/4 Finals) introduce the top eight nations ranked 1 to 8, competing against the winners from the 1/8 Finals.

From there, the competition advances to the Semifinals (1/2 Finals), featuring the top eight teams emerging from the quarterfinals. The event culminates in the Grand Final, where the top four nations from the semifinals race for the ultimate title.

Race Format

All races are sailed on an Olympic windward-leeward course, ensuring fairness and high-performance competition. Each race features a four-boat fleet, with race durations ranging from 40 to 75 minutes, delivering intense and spectator-friendly action.
